Ankara: Iran said Wednesday that a senior commander of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had died of wounds from an Israeli airstrike.

According to Anadolu Agency, in a statement, the IRGC's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters confirmed that its commander, Major General Ali Shadmani, 'was martyred' after succumbing to his injuries. Last week, Israel had claimed responsibility for killing Shadmani, labeling him as Iran's wartime chief of staff.

The airstrikes, launched by Israel on June 13, targeted several locations across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities. Israel justified the strikes by alleging that Tehran was nearing the production of a nuclear bomb, a claim that Iran has consistently and strongly denied.

In response to the Israeli airstrikes, Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks. The conflict escalated as the United States became involved, bombing three Iranian nuclear sites.

After 12 days of intense aerial combat between Israel and Iran, US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire on Monday, aiming to bring an end to the conflict between the two regional adversaries.
