Baghdad:Iran remains open to resuming negotiations with the United States but insists on 'credible guarantees' before doing so, stated Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Araghchi emphasized Iran's refusal to succumb to coercion, threats, or intimidation while maintaining its sovereign rights. He expressed Iran's readiness for dialogue based on mutual respect if credible guarantees are provided.
He noted that Iran had negotiated in good faith over the past two years but claimed that diplomatic efforts were often followed by military attacks, leading to deep mistrust. Araghchi mentioned a seven-day proposal conveyed through Qatar, offering the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of normal maritime traffic, contingent on specific conditions.
Araghchi highlighted the June 17 Islamabad understanding between Iran and the US, facilitated by Pakistan and supported by Qatar, which led to a temporary recovery of maritime traffic before implementation stalled.
On the topic of Yemen, he stated that the conflict requires an inclusive political process for resolution and reiterated Iran's willingness to aid dialogue based on a pre-agreed peace roadmap. Araghchi also reaffirmed Iran's stance on Palestine and urged coordinated action by OIC members to support Palestinian rights.
The OIC meeting, held under the theme 'Dialogue and Solidarity Two Essential Pillars for Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development,' saw Iraq assume the organization's rotating presidency from Turkey.
