Iran Vows to Uphold Role in Strait of Hormuz Amid US Threats

Ankara: Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Monday that Tehran will continue to be the 'guardian' of the Strait of Hormuz, following US President Donald Trump's declaration to levy fees on shipping through the pivotal waterway.

According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi expressed via the US social media platform X that President Trump is correct in asserting that those ensuring the secure passage of commercial vessels through the Strait should be reimbursed for their services. Araghchi emphasized that Iran has historically been, and will persist as, the protector of the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier on Monday, President Trump announced intentions for the US to impose a blockade on Iran at the Strait of Hormuz, proposing a 20% toll on ships for safe passage. Araghchi responded, indicating that while 20% is excessive, Iran is committed to fairness in its dealings.

The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz have intensified, with both nations engaged in retaliatory actions despite efforts by Pakistan to mediate a memorandum of understanding to resolve their disputes and achieve a durable peace agreement.
