Ankara: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas engaged in a conversation focusing on regional and international issues. The discussions included what Tehran describes as Ukraine's attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, as well as the rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi condemned the attack in the Caspian Sea, as stated by Iran's Foreign Ministry. He called for a 'decisive response' from the UN Security Council, the European Union, and the international community, urging accountability for those involved in and supporting the 'criminal' attack.

The dialogue between Araghchi and Kallas also covered the developments in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, particularly in the aftermath of Iran's military response to US actions against Iran. Both officials highlighted the importance of diplomatic efforts to manage tensions and prevent further escalation in the region.

Earlier, Iran accused Ukraine of attacking one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea, resulting in one sailor's death and another's injury. Tehran condemned this alleged attack as an act of aggression and vowed to defend its national interests.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned on the social media platform X that Ukraine had achieved 'very strong results' with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. These strikes reportedly targeted 'vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship,' although he did not specify the vessel identified by Tehran.
