Riyadh: The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia discussed over the phone on Monday the latest developments of the ongoing Pakistan-mediated diplomatic process between Tehran and Washington. The conversation between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan signifies growing regional involvement in easing US-Iran tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, the phone discussion was the second between the two foreign ministers in the past 24 hours, highlighting the urgency and importance of the matter. The dialogue comes amidst heightened regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, which led to Iranian retaliatory actions against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, and prompted the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation saw a temporary de-escalation with a ceasefire that took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation. However, talks in Islamabad did not yield a permanent resolution. US President Donald Trump extended the truce without setting a new deadline, emphasizing the tentative nature of the ceasefire.

On Sunday, Iran communicated its response to a US proposal aimed at ending the conflict, but President Trump deemed the Iranian proposal "totally unacceptable." The ongoing discussions between regional powers reflect efforts to stabilize the region and achieve a diplomatic breakthrough.
