Mashhad: Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was buried Thursday at the Imam Reza Shrine in the northeastern city of Mashhad, concluding a week of funeral ceremonies, according to Iranian state media. Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike in February.
According to Anadolu Agency, thousands gathered in Mashhad for the prayers marking the final stage of the weeklong funeral procession. Khamenei's son, Mostafa Khamenei, led the prayers. The Press TV reported that Khamenei was laid to rest in the Dar al-Dhikr prayer hall at the shrine after his coffin was carried around the tomb of Imam Reza as part of the funeral rites. Millions of mourners from across Iran and the region participated in the ceremonies preceding the burial.
The attack in February, which resulted in Khamenei's death, was part of joint US-Israeli operations against Iran. The strikes led to over 3,000 casualties. Tehran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
In an effort to de-escalate tensions, Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding last month under Pakistani mediation to end their military conflict and reach a peace agreement. However, recent days have seen renewed hostilities. Iranian forces launched strikes on US military infrastructure in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Jordan following US attacks, in retaliation to Iranian strikes on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
