Damascus:Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa engaged in discussions about exporting Iraqi oil through the Baniyas pipeline, which has a capacity of up to 2 million barrels per day. The talks, which took place in Damascus, also focused on strengthening economic and security cooperation between the two nations.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the discussions were part of expanded talks between delegations from Iraq and Syria. The talks addressed exporting Iraqi oil through the Baniyas pipeline and increasing trade. However, details on the project's technical requirements, financing, or implementation timeline were not provided.
In addition to oil exports, the two leaders discussed enhancing the agricultural sector to achieve food and economic integration. Prime Minister Zaidi emphasized the unity of Iraqis and Syrians, describing them as "one people in two countries," and highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in economic and social fields. Security cooperation and coordination on regional and international issues were also topics of discussion, as both leaders aimed to promote peace and stability in the region.
President Sharaa expressed enthusiasm for Zaidi's visit and reaffirmed Syria's dedication to strengthening bilateral relations and achieving high levels of cooperation. The Iraqi News Agency and the Syrian Arab News Agency reported that Zaidi led a high-level delegation to Damascus International Airport, where he was welcomed by Sharaa. Talks were expected to address bilateral ties, border security, and counter-terrorism efforts.
The visit follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in July between Damascus and Baghdad to rehabilitate an oil pipeline from Haditha in Iraq to the Syrian port of Baniyas, with Chevron expected to implement the project. The Iraqi government had earlier approved studies for proposed oil export routes to develop alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties after the establishment of Sharaa's administration in Syria in January 2025.
