Baghdad: Iraq will not allow any party or individual to use its territory as a base for attacks against Iran, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani assured Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a phone conversation. This declaration comes amid escalating tensions in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sudani emphasized Iraq’s commitment to Iran’s security and sovereignty, noting that attacks on Iraqi soil violate its sovereignty and undermine efforts to end ongoing conflicts. This stance was reiterated in a statement from Sudani’s office shared on the US social media platform X.

Sudani expressed strong disapproval of what he termed the “unjust war” targeting Iran, underlining Iraq’s dedication to regional peace and security. He highlighted Iraq’s readiness to facilitate the return to dialogue and peaceful solutions, distancing from forceful approaches that threaten both regional and international security.

The statement follows recent joint strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, which have resulted in over 1,300 fatalities, including the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader. The strikes have also claimed the lives of over 150 schoolgirls. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military bases, impacting global markets and causing energy prices to surge.
