Baghdad: The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council announced plans to initiate legal proceedings against ISIS detainees transferred from Syria. The detainees were moved following clashes between Syrian security forces and the YPG/SDF group, which resulted in the transfer from prisons once under SDF control.

According to Anadolu Agency, Iraqi courts are set to begin judicial procedures once the suspects are formally received and placed in designated correctional facilities. The Council emphasized the importance of documenting and archiving 'terrorist crimes' to establish cross-border criminal accountability and ensure no suspect escapes legal consequences.

The Council declared that all suspects, regardless of nationality or rank within ISIS, fall under the jurisdiction of the Iraqi judiciary, and legal procedures will be uniformly applied.

On Wednesday, Iraqi army spokesperson Sabah al-Numan confirmed that Iraq received an initial group of 150 'terrorist elements' who were previously detained in Syria. The transfer was sanctioned by the National Security Ministerial Council during an emergency meeting with coordination from the US-led coalition against ISIS, involving both Iraqi nationals and detainees of other nationalities.

Additionally, on Thursday, Iraqi Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah visited the Syrian border with a senior military delegation to monitor the situation and oversee measures to prevent any ISIS infiltration into Iraq.

Iraq declared victory over ISIS in December 2017 after a prolonged three-year conflict that led to the recapture of all territories held by the group. Despite this, ISIS cells continue to operate in northern, western, and eastern provinces, conducting sporadic attacks, while Iraqi forces persist in security operations to eliminate the group's remnants.
