Baghdad: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met with US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack in Baghdad to discuss efforts to prevent regional escalation and the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes. The discussion focused on bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States, as well as regional developments, including Iraq's role in supporting stability in Syria and the broader region, according to a statement from Sudani's office.

According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting also highlighted the recent completion of a 23-day mission by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which involved transferring over 5,700 ISIS members from detention facilities in northeastern Syria to Iraqi custody. Both parties exchanged views on averting regional escalation and emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in conflict resolution.

The discussions further explored opportunities for economic cooperation and support for development initiatives to reinforce long-term stability. Prime Minister Sudani emphasized the need for fundamental solutions to address deep-rooted issues and prevent aggression and violations of sovereignty in the region. Barrack acknowledged Iraq's significant role in addressing regional challenges, reducing tensions, supporting dialogue, and combating terrorism.

The meeting occurred amidst increasing tensions between the US and Iran concerning Tehran's nuclear program. The US has enhanced its military presence in the Middle East, deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and additional fighter jets, with the USS Gerald R. Ford en route.
