Ireland to Wear Black Armbands in Controversial Match Against Israel

Debrecen:The Republic of Ireland players plan to wear black armbands to honor those who lost their lives in the Gaza conflict during their UEFA Nations League match against Israel in Hungary. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed this decision ahead of Sunday's game.

According to Anadolu Agency, FAI Chief Executive David Courell announced that the team voted on whether to proceed with the match, with a significant majority in favor. One player has withdrawn from the squad, and some players, including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, have reportedly requested to pull out.

The match, held at the Nagyerdei Stadium, has been contentious since the draw placed Ireland and Israel in Group B3. The Irish Sport for Palestine's "Stop The Game" campaign urged the team to withdraw from the fixtures, but the FAI has decided to fulfill the matches following player consultations.

Ireland's coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, acknowledged the players' discomfort, noting that some felt they were playing "against genocide." Midfielder Jason Knight publicly expressed his opposition to the game proceeding. More than 160 Irish athletes have signed a letter urging the team not to play, and demonstrations have been organized.

The first match occurs on Sunday, with a return fixture scheduled in Serbia behind closed doors on October 4. Despite differing views within the team, the FAI respects all players' opinions and appreciates the situation's sensitivity.
