Istanbul: Italian journalist Lorenzo Agostino claimed on Saturday that he experienced 'barbaric' conditions while being illegally detained by Israel in international waters following an attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels bound for Gaza. Agostino, who was among the passengers on the flotilla, described the ordeal upon his arrival in Istanbul on a special flight.
According to Anadolu Agency, Agostino recounted the events, stating that he and other passengers were kidnapped and subjected to harsh conditions. He noted that once they were taken to land, the treatment worsened, likening it to that of a terrorist group. He described instances of physical abuse and the deliberate deprivation of basic necessities like fresh water for over two days.
Agostino highlighted the treatment of Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was also aboard the flotilla. He described how Thunberg was humiliated, wrapped in an Israeli flag, and showcased as if she were a trophy. Agostino expressed his shock at the situation, hoping for an end to what he termed as 'barbarism.'
He further detailed the hostile reception at Ashdod port, where Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was present. Agostino alleged that Ben-Gvir's presence was to ensure they were treated as terrorists. He recalled being subjected to blindfolding, tight handcuffs, inadequate clothing, and exposure to freezing temperatures in a high air-conditioned van for hours.
The Global Sumud Flotilla aimed to break the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave. However, the flotilla was intercepted by the Israeli army, which attacked the vessels, seized boats, and detained hundreds of passengers.
