Beirut: The governments of Israel and Lebanon have reached a consensus on a US-brokered proposal to conclude the prolonged conflict with the Hezbollah group, as announced by President Joe Biden. The agreement is set to be implemented starting Wednesday at 4 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), with the Lebanese Armed Forces taking control of southern Lebanon over the next 60 days while Israel commences a gradual withdrawal of its remaining forces.
According to Anadolu Agency, President Biden expressed that the United States, along with France and other allies, has committed to working with both Israel and Lebanon to ensure the full implementation of this arrangement. Biden also mentioned plans for the US, along with Trkiye, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and other countries, to push for a cease-fire in Gaza, aiming to end the Israeli offensive and secure the release of over 100 hostages.
The agreement has been well-received internationally. Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the cease-fire, urging Israel
to adhere fully to the terms and withdraw from all occupied Lebanese territories. European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also lauded the cease-fire, emphasizing the need for a sustainable political solution and immediate progress toward a Gaza cease-fire and humanitarian aid access.
