Jerusalem: Israeli forces turned parts of East Jerusalem, including Old City and Damascus Gate, into a militarized zone on Saturday, setting up checkpoints during Holy Saturday observances at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
According to Anadolu Agency, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing local sources, reported that Israeli forces established checkpoints on roads leading to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City. This move limited access for those wishing to attend the Holy Saturday services, a significant event in the Christian liturgical calendar.
The report noted that the forces checked the identification of several young men, preventing some from entering the area. This action came after the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem encouraged Christians to participate in the Holy Saturday services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Previously, Israeli officials had closed the church for 40 days, justifying the decision with alleged security concerns amid regional tensions. Holy Saturday, observed by Eastern churches, marks a pivotal moment preceding Easter.
