Ankara: Trkiye's relations with Israel have seen fluctuations over the years, yet Ankara has consistently upheld the legitimacy of the Israeli state and shown respect toward its people. Trkiye's foreign policy has centered on 'peace at home and peace in the world,' with a particular focus on the Middle East.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trkiye has been a steadfast supporter of the Palestinian people, who have faced adversity not only within Israel but throughout the region, living in dire conditions in refugee camps. Trkiye has consistently supported various segments of the Palestinian population, including children, women, the elderly, and everyday citizens, who have endured violence and destruction over the years. Recently, Trkiye's criticism of Israeli policies has intensified due to the influence of ultraconservative Orthodox Jews in Israel's administration.
The Turkish government recognizes that there are Israelis who oppose the extreme right-wing policies and respects their efforts. However, there is concern that the policies of the Netanyahu administration are steering both the Middle East and Israel itself toward turmoil.
The situation traces back to the First Intifada in December 1987, when Palestinians protested against Israeli occupation. Initially nonviolent, the movement was met with forceful Israeli responses. This led to global support for the Palestinians, prompting international pressure on Israel to consider a two-state solution and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority.
However, the Palestinian Authority failed to meet its people's expectations due to internal issues and the loss of Yasser Arafat. The Second Intifada in September 2000 highlighted the growing frustration, yet the Western world largely ignored it. Since then, Israel has continued to suppress Palestinians and expand its territory through illegal settlements, particularly in the West Bank, while global reactions have been largely ineffectual. Trkiye has remained a vocal advocate for Palestinians, often clashing with Israeli hardliners.
The recent Israeli assault on Gaza post-Hamas attack in October 2023 resulted in massive destruction and significant loss of Palestinian lives, which shifted global opinion against Israel. Trkiye's condemnation of the actions was clear, but largely unheard on the international stage.
The Israeli government's subsequent focus on Iran, supported by the US, led to a military campaign launched in February 2023 with objectives that remain unfulfilled. This has raised questions within the US regarding its involvement and support for Israel amidst growing global isolation.
President Erdogan of Trkiye envisions a future where both Israeli and Palestinian children can live without fear. However, the continuation of current Israeli policies hinders this vision. The situation is further complicated by threats against Trkiye and the presence of Israel's nuclear arsenal, raising concerns about regional stability.
