Jerusalem: Israeli authorities are on high alert as another flotilla approaches the Gaza Strip, aiming to break the ongoing blockade. Media reports indicate that the Israeli army is preparing to intercept the convoy, which carries numerous activists from Trkiye.
According to Anadolu Agency, Channel 13 has reported concerns that the situation may escalate into violent confrontations, reminiscent of the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident. During that event, a Turkish-led aid ship was stormed by Israeli commandos, resulting in the deaths of 10 activists and injuries to 56 others.
Israeli security forces are strategizing for a variety of complex scenarios, including potential resistance during the flotilla's interception. The flotilla set sail from Italy and is now en route to Gaza. Security assessments suggest the upcoming encounter could present more challenges than previous ones, such as the incident involving Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. Forces remain on increased alert as they prepare for any possible developments.
The humanitarian flotilla, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), is reportedly 150 nautical miles from Gaza's coast. The FFC released a statement on its Telegram channel confirming the convoy's proximity to Gaza and its mission to challenge the Israeli siege.
The flotilla consists of nine boats with around 100 participants, all part of the FFC's 'Thousand Madleens' initiative. This effort is aimed at both delivering aid and raising global awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has been under blockade for nearly 18 years.
The current voyage follows an incident last week where Israeli naval forces intercepted over 40 boats heading to Gaza, detaining more than 450 activists. Israel has a history of attacking and seizing Gaza-bound ships, confiscating their cargo, and deporting those on board.
The ongoing blockade has severely impacted Gaza's nearly 2.4 million residents, with border closures and restricted access to food and medicine contributing to a dire humanitarian situation. Since October 2023, Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of over 67,100 Palestinians, primarily women and children, rendering the region increasingly uninhabitable.
