BEIRUT: At least five people were killed and nine others injured as Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Sunday, according to the Health Ministry.

According to Anadolu Agency, the airstrikes targeted the area of Haret Sidon, resulting in three fatalities and wounding nine others. In a separate incident, two additional individuals lost their lives in an airstrike in the town of Jbal El Botm, as reported by the state news agency NNA.

The escalation in airstrikes marks a significant intensification of Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon. This campaign, which began in late September, is directed at what Israel claims are Hezbollah targets. The attacks are part of a broader conflict that has seen a year-long cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah, intensified by Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip.

Lebanese health authorities report that more than 2,900 people have been killed and over 13,000 injured in Israeli attacks since October 2023. The conflict saw further escalation
when Israel launched an incursion into southern Lebanon on October 1.
