Washington: Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi is set to travel to Washington on Sunday for discussions with US military officials, as announced by the Israeli army. During his three-day visit, Halevi will engage with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), and other senior officials to address significant strategic and operational matters.

According to Anadolu Agency, the visit presents an opportunity for Halevi to express his appreciation to his American counterparts for their steadfast support, commitment, and strong personal ties. This visit precedes Halevi's scheduled resignation on March 6, as announced last month.

The backdrop of Halevi's visit is a recently implemented ceasefire agreement in Gaza, effective since January 19. The ceasefire halted Israel's military operations, which resulted in the deaths of over 48,200 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, and left the region devastated. In light of these events, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.
