Hebron:Israeli forces have forcibly displaced approximately 2,000 Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank city of Hebron, as confirmed by Israel's defense minister. The displacement occurred amid ongoing military operations in the region.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Israel's defense minister, Israel Katz, stated that the displaced residents would not be allowed to return until the dismantling of what he referred to as 'Hamas infrastructure' in Hebron. This announcement aligns with an Israeli military operation that has disrupted normalcy in the city, affecting educational and municipal services.
The Hebron education directorate has suspended schools for Sunday and Monday, while Hebron University and Al-Quds Open University have shifted Sunday's classes online due to the military activities. Additionally, the closure of the city's entrances has led to an accumulation of rubbish, as access to disposal sites has been blocked.
The military operation followed an incident on Friday when two Palestinians attacked an Israeli checkpoint, resulting in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and injuries to three others. The attackers were killed by Israeli forces. In response, Israeli forces sealed off Hebron and nearby Halhul, initiating an operation expected to last several days and involving Shin Bet and Border Police forces.
The escalation in Hebron is part of a broader trend of increasing Israeli military actions and violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the onset of Israel's war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023. These actions have included the killing and detention of Palestinians, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and displacement of communities, alongside illegal settlement expansion.
