Israeli Government Accused of Fostering Occupier Violence in West Bank

Tel Aviv:As the Israeli government expands access to weapons and eases measures against extremist occupiers, accusations have arisen regarding official complicity in attacks on Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank. These allegations are supported by Israeli media, rights groups, politicians, former security officials, and international investigations.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Israeli rights group Yesh Din documented 377 violent incidents involving occupiers and soldiers in a two-week period through October 10, affecting 162 Palestinian communities. The violence coincides with the olive harvest season, during which Palestinian farmers have faced physical assaults, crop theft, and obstruction from harvesting, with soldiers present in numerous incidents.

In response to the violence, former Israeli officials, including prime ministers Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak, have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government of deliberately enabling these attacks. They claim that the army, police, and Shin Bet are complicit in advancing policies aimed at displacing Palestinians and annexing their land, demanding accountability for those responsible.

The Israeli government's policies, such as expanding gun license eligibility to residents of illegal settlements and ending administrative detention for Jewish occupiers, have been criticized for facilitating impunity and furthering violence. Despite warnings from security agencies like the Shin Bet, ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have supported these measures, which have led to Western sanctions against them for inciting violence and abusing Palestinian rights.

A United Nations inquiry and Israeli rights groups have linked occupier violence to state policies aimed at settlement expansion and land annexation. These findings highlight the state's involvement in providing financial and military support to attackers while shielding them from accountability.

Palestinians warn that the continued violence and government-supported settlement expansion threaten their communities and the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state. The situation remains tense, with ongoing disputes within Israeli institutions about the responsibility for violence in the West Bank.
