Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that Israel expects Syria to establish a demilitarized buffer zone extending from Damascus to the occupied Golan Heights. The statement came following his visit to Israeli soldiers who were wounded during an Israeli operation in the Beit Jinn area of southern Syria, which resulted in the deaths of 13 Syrians, as reported by Netanyahu's office.

According to Anadolu Agency, Netanyahu emphasized the importance of creating a buffer zone that includes the approaches to Mount Hermon and its peak. He stated that maintaining control over these territories is crucial for ensuring the security of Israeli citizens, referencing Israel's previous occupation of the Syrian buffer zone last year.

Netanyahu expressed willingness to reach an agreement with Syria, provided there is goodwill and an understanding of the principles Israel holds. However, he maintained that Israel would adhere to its principles regardless of negotiations. There has been no immediate response from Syrian authorities concerning Netanyahu's statements.

In a related development, US President Donald Trump cautioned Israel against actions that could destabilize Syria. This warning was issued shortly before a phone conversation with Netanyahu. Trump highlighted the importance of Israel maintaining a constructive dialogue with Syria to support its development into a prosperous state. He commended Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa for his efforts to create positive outcomes for both nations, describing the situation as a historic opportunity for peace in the Middle East.

Following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel expanded its occupation of the Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, an action that breached the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Syria.
