Beirut: An Israeli soldier was killed and seven others were wounded in southern Lebanon after an explosive device detonated near a military command post, Israel's public broadcaster KAN reported early Thursday.
According to Anadolu Agency, the incident occurred around 5 pm Wednesday as troops from the Givati Brigade were moving on foot near a forward command post of the deputy commander of the 36th Division. The Israeli military described the explosive as an "enemy device" that detonated near the force close to the Litani River. The seven wounded soldiers sustained shrapnel injuries and were evacuated by helicopter to hospitals for treatment.
The blast occurred amid ongoing tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border, despite a recent understanding between Washington and Tehran aimed at reducing hostilities. The diplomatic efforts followed attacks launched by Israel and the US against Iran on February 28. Iranian officials have emphasized that stopping Israeli military actions, particularly in Lebanon, is a core objective of a memorandum of understanding signed by the Iranian and US presidents.
Israel maintains control over certain areas in southern Lebanon, with some regions under occupation for decades. During the latest military campaign, Israeli forces advanced more than 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory, exacerbating the already volatile situation along the border.
