Israeli Soldiers Convicted of Torturing Palestinian Detainee Defend Actions

Jerusalem: Israeli soldiers convicted of torturing and sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman prison have publicly defended their actions, demanding recognition for their deeds. The soldiers, whose identities were concealed by black masks, addressed the media during a press conference outside the Supreme Court in West Jerusalem.

According to Anadolu Agency, the soldiers expressed frustration over the accusations against them, emphasizing a lack of appreciation for their actions. One soldier, identified as 'A' by Israeli Channel 7, lamented that they were subjected to a show trial and denied the opportunity to respond to the charges. He further stated, "We will not remain silent. We will keep fighting for justice and for our families."

The incident dates back to July 2024, when the soldiers tortured a Palestinian prisoner in Sde Teiman, resulting in severe injuries. The case gained renewed attention after a Tel Aviv court extended the detention of former military prosecutor Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi. She was detained for authorizing the release of a video showing the torture, which led to global outrage.

Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned shortly after the video's release, stating that it was intended to counter false propaganda against army law enforcement. Meanwhile, the assaulted detainee has reportedly been released and returned to Gaza, although this has not been confirmed by Hamas or Palestinian organizations.

Currently, there are over 10,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons facing harsh conditions, including torture and medical neglect, as reported by human rights organizations. Israeli journalist Yoana Gonen criticized the portrayal of the soldiers as heroes, reflecting on the broader implications of the incident for Israel's international image. Gonen highlighted the leak as a significant propaganda breach, questioning the nation's accountability for its actions.

In the context of ongoing conflict, Israel has reportedly caused significant casualties and injuries in Gaza, escalating tensions in the region.
