Gaza: The Israeli army is reportedly responsible for the deaths of an average of 100 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip each day, alongside those succumbing to starvation and lack of medical care, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
According to Anadolu Agency, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that these fatalities occur due to the ongoing Israeli military operations and shootings at the 'Gaza Humanitarian Foundation' food distribution points. The humanitarian crisis is further exacerbated by a scarcity of food and medical services, leading to additional deaths. Since October 2023, over 66,100 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed in Gaza, rendering the region uninhabitable and causing a famine.
In response to the escalating crisis, Israel initiated a separate aid distribution program on May 27 through the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), circumventing the UN and other international humanitarian organizations. This initiative has resulted in nearly 2,600 deaths and 19,000 injuries from Israeli fire during aid collection at these distribution sites.
Lazzarini emphasized the need to document what he referred to as ongoing Israeli crimes in Gaza and called for immediate international intervention. He urged for an immediate ceasefire, stressing that the suffering of the Gazan people must be acknowledged and addressed.
Additionally, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reiterated his support for UNRWA's mission to assist Palestinian refugees, particularly in Gaza. During a meeting with Lazzarini at the Munich Leaders Meeting in Saudi Arabia, Abdelatty highlighted the necessity of sustained financial and political backing for the UN agency. He appealed to the international community to pressure Israel into permitting UNRWA's relief convoys into Gaza, especially amid the famine resulting from Israeli policies.
In October 2024, after allegations surfaced accusing some UNRWA staff of participating in attacks on October 7, 2023, Israel restricted UNRWA's operations in the West Bank and Gaza following a Knesset vote. Established after the 1948 Palestinian Nakba, UNRWA aids around 5.9 million Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.
