Jerusalem: Israel's Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a petition filed by families of Israeli captives in Gaza demanding the restoration of electricity supply to the blockaded enclave. Judge Alex Stein stated that Israel is under no obligation to provide electricity to Gaza, emphasizing that the decision is a matter for political leadership rather than judicial review.

According to Anadolu Agency, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen praised the court's decision, asserting that the cessation of electricity supply to Gaza is justified from both a security and moral standpoint. Cohen expressed that sustained and increased pressure on Hamas is crucial for securing the return of hostages and ensuring Hamas's removal from Gaza.

Last month, Israel intensified its blockade on Gaza by cutting off electricity, despite existing ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreements. This move is part of ongoing efforts to exert pressure on the enclave's governing bodies.

The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 50,800 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023, with the majority being women and children. In response to the ongoing violence, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
