Istanbul’s Historic Bostancilar Tabhanesi Mosque to Be Restored After Seven Decades

Istanbul:The Bostancilar Tabhanesi Mosque, known as the Yedekciler Mosque, is set to be restored in Istanbul's Sarayburnu district after disappearing from the city's historic skyline approximately 70 years ago. Originally built during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to serve sick palace gardeners, the mosque was located outside the sea walls of Topkapi Palace, between Sarayburnu and Ahirkapi, before it was demolished during coastal road development in the 1950s.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the restoration efforts are being led by Fatih Municipality to reintegrate the mosque into Istanbul's historical and cultural heritage. The mosque, which played a significant role in the daily life around the Ottoman palace, represents a part of the historical buildings lost during Istanbul's modernization efforts.

Urban development projects between 1956 and 1960 significantly altered Sarayburnu's coastline and urban fabric, affecting the area's transport network and historic skyline. Academic studies have identified the mosque among the structures that vanished during this period, with its former location traced through historical photographs.

Fatih Mayor Mehmet Ergun Turan highlighted that the Bostancilar Tabhanesi Mosque was the sole mosque located just outside Istanbul's sea walls. It was the first mosque visible when crossing from Uskudar or by sea, but began to fall into disrepair in the 1930s, with its minaret demolished in the 1940s, and eventually disappearing by the 1950s and 1960s due to the coastal road construction.

Mayor Turan expressed joy at the restoration of the mosque to Istanbul’s skyline, nearly a century later. He noted that photographs, maps, and engravings document its existence. He emphasized that the restoration of ancestral heritage works, including mosques, is funded by donors rather than public funds. To date, the reconstruction of eight mosques has been completed, with ongoing restoration efforts for ten similar mosques.
