Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed Italy's readiness to back European measures aimed at discouraging Israeli settlement expansion and addressing violent remarks by certain Israeli officials. Meloni made these comments on Wednesday, ahead of the European Council summit scheduled for Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Meloni condemned Israeli settlement plans and expressed disapproval of violent statements from some Israeli officials, emphasizing Italy's willingness to support individual restrictive measures by Europe. She highlighted the 20-point plan by US President Donald Trump, signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, as a significant positive development, acknowledging the diplomatic efforts of Egypt, Qatar, Trkiye, and especially Trump.

Meloni stressed the potential for a credible and lasting peace in the Middle East, while warning of a fragile balance. She criticized Hamas for violating the cease-fire and asserted that Hamas should have no role in future Palestinian governance, citing this as a precondition for Italy's recognition of the State of Palestine. Italy's humanitarian assistance to Gaza, including over 2,000 tons of flour and 200 tons of other aid, was also highlighted, alongside support for the Palestinian National Authority.

On the topic of Ukraine, Meloni reaffirmed Italy's unwavering support, condemning Russia's actions and emphasizing the importance of a just peace achieved through credible negotiations. She clarified that Italy will not deploy its troops to Ukraine, but is exploring measures regarding frozen Russian assets and advocating for European defense readiness.

Regarding environmental issues, Meloni reiterated Italy's commitment to emission reduction targets but criticized the European Commission's proposed revision of the European Climate Law. She argued against an ideological approach that could harm economic and industrial sectors and urged for substantial changes in policy direction.
