Italy Stands Firm on US Base Agreements Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

Rome: Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized the nation's commitment to international agreements, clarifying that Italy's alliance with the United States does not signify involvement in any conflict, particularly with Iran. Crosetto addressed the Italian parliament on Tuesday, focusing on the use of US military bases in Italy, amidst growing geopolitical tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Crosetto stated during his parliamentary briefing that respecting international agreements is not synonymous with being engaged in war. He reassured that Italy, as a NATO member, is not at war with Iran and reiterated Italy's steadfast adherence to its treaties with the United States, a practice upheld for over 75 years irrespective of the changing political landscape in Italy.

Crosetto further emphasized the continuity and consistency with which Italy has applied its agreements regarding the use of American military bases. He stressed that no Italian government, regardless of its political orientation, has ever failed to uphold these international treaties with the United States. He urged political leaders to maintain restraint in their debates, warning against impulsive reactions that could undermine the nation's legal obligations under international treaties and its Constitution.

Acknowledging occasional policy differences with the US, Crosetto reaffirmed the enduring alliance between the two nations, highlighting that the bilateral relationship transcends the individual leaders in office. In a separate interview with Corriere della Sera, he expressed concerns over growing global instability and nuclear threats, urging global awareness of the unprecedented nature of the current geopolitical climate.

The backdrop to these reassurances includes recent threats by US President Donald Trump to target Iranian infrastructure, should Tehran not comply with demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This comes amidst escalations following a joint US-Israel offensive against Iran, leading to significant casualties and retaliatory attacks by Iran on several countries in the region, disrupting global markets and aviation.
