Italy’s Prime Minister Supports Sanctions Against Israeli Settlers and Minister Ben Gvir

Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on Thursday that Italy endorses sanctions against Israeli settlers and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. She emphasized the necessity for extensive discussions on the relationship between the European Union and Israel.

According to Anadolu Agency, Meloni addressed the Italian parliament prior to the European Council meeting, advocating for a dialogue that transcends superficial polemics and focuses on the strategic significance of EU-Israel relations. She insisted that the Council should deliberate on the future direction of these relations.

Meloni explicitly supported sanctions targeting Israeli settlers, indicating Italy's stance against those who incite violence and extremism. Her comments reflect a broader commitment to measures that curb such activities.

In the backdrop of these discussions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. This conflict has reportedly resulted in the deaths of nearly 73,000 individuals and injuries to over 173,000 since October 2023. Additionally, Israel is confronting a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), initiated by South Africa and backed by several nations, accusing Israel of genocide in the Palestinian enclave.
