Jeff Bezos Nears Deal to Acquire Liverpool Stake

Beirut: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly part of a consortium on the verge of finalizing an agreement to purchase approximately one-third of the English Premier League club Liverpool, as reported by Sky News on Monday. The consortium is spearheaded by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, according to the broadcaster.

According to Anadolu Agency, Liverpool's controlling shareholder, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is expected to announce the transaction as early as this week. FSG had previously confirmed in July that Bhatia's consortium had expressed interest in acquiring a minority stake in the club.

The deal is anticipated to value Liverpool at about $5.9 billion, thereby valuing the approximately 30% stake at around $1.8 billion. Despite this transaction, FSG is set to maintain control over the club.

Bhatia, a former shareholder of Queens Park Rangers, is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. If the deal is concluded, it would integrate Bezos, Bhatia, and Saverin into Liverpool's ownership structure as part of the minority investment consortium.

Forbes has estimated Bezos' wealth to exceed $280 billion, while Saverin's fortune is assessed at over $32 billion. FSG has been in control of Liverpool since purchasing the club for about $402 million in 2010 and also received a minority investment from global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023.
