Beirut: Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday highlighted the necessity of maintaining the US-Iran ceasefire and resuming discussions for a comprehensive resolution. During their meeting in Amman, they explored regional developments and strategies to enhance cooperation and mitigate regional tensions, as stated by Jordan's Foreign Ministry.
According to Anadolu Agency, Safadi and Guterres underscored the critical need to adhere to the ceasefire between the US and Iran and to restart negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive solution that addresses all sources of tension. This includes ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz under international law. A tense calm has been maintained in the region since Friday, following a halt to US and Iranian strikes after escalations that began on July 11.
The escalation transpired despite a memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran in June, which called for an end to hostilities and the initiation of broader agreement negotiations to conclude the conflict initiated by Israel and the US on February 28.
In discussions on Syria, Safadi and Guterres emphasized the significance of supporting Syria's unity, security, stability, and sovereignty, along with the reconstruction efforts spearheaded by the Syrian government to build a future aligning with the aspirations of the Syrian populace. They also demanded an end to Israeli meddling and attacks against Syria.
On Sunday, Guterres announced his intention to present a detailed report to the UN Security Council at the end of July regarding Israeli violations in Syria. Concerning the occupied Palestinian territories, Safadi highlighted the urgency of implementing all provisions of Trump's plan for the Gaza Strip, including lifting Israeli restrictions that impede the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid into the enclave.
The UN Security Council ratified the plan via Resolution 2803, adopted on November 17, 2025. Hamas claims it has fulfilled its commitments under the initial phase of Trump's plan by releasing Israeli captives, accusing Israel of failing to meet its obligations by persisting with attacks and restricting humanitarian assistance.
Future phases anticipate a phased Israeli military withdrawal, deployment of an international stabilization force, transfer of Gaza's administration to a Palestinian committee, disarmament of Palestinian factions, and reconstruction. Safadi cautioned that Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank, including illegal settlement expansion, occupier violence, and attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo in occupied East Jerusalem, risk pushing the West Bank toward a crisis, constituting a blatant breach of international law.
Both parties also stressed the pivotal role of supporting the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) to ensure the continued provision of essential services. Guterres acknowledged the efforts of Jordanian King Abdullah II in promoting security and Jordan's humanitarian role in delivering aid to Gaza, as per the statement.
