Austin:Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli took a significant step towards his first Formula One world title by securing a decisive win at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday. Despite his dominant performance, Antonelli narrowly missed clinching the championship in Austin, Texas.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Antonelli, aged 20, finished ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. He now leads his Mercedes teammate George Russell by 123 points, with the championship continuing in Mexico City next weekend.
Antonelli could be crowned world champion if he maintains his lead, needing only to avoid losing more than 23 points to Russell or 24 points to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in the upcoming race. A ninth-place finish would ensure his title even if Russell wins, while a tenth place would suffice if Hamilton takes the victory. Should neither Russell nor Hamilton win in Mexico City, Antonelli will secure the world championship regardless of his position.
The US Grand Prix marked Antonelli's first victory since the Spanish Grand Prix last month, and his ninth win of the 2026 season. The race saw a fierce battle for second place between Verstappen and Leclerc, while Antonelli maintained control from the start, exemplifying his dominance throughout the season. The upcoming race in Mexico City presents Antonelli with a clear opportunity to conclude his title-winning campaign.
