Pristina: The 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers play-off final between the Turkish National Football Team and Kosovo is set to be played amid a spirit of camaraderie between the two nations.
According to Anadolu Agency, both countries have been exchanging messages of friendship ahead of the crucial match, reflecting on a significant moment from 2014 when the Turkish team played a friendly against Kosovo, even before the latter was recognized by FIFA in 2016.
Kosovan Football’s X social media account recently highlighted the historical encounter, recalling the 2014 game as a gesture of respect from Trkiye that has left a lasting impression on Kosovo. “Back in 2014, when no one would face us, Trkiye showed up. They played Kosovo away, before we were even recognized by FIFA – a gesture of respect and love we will never ever forget. 12 years later . we’re on our way to a World Cup final,” the account stated, along with photos from the match. The upcoming fixture sees the Turkish National Football Team visiting Kosovo on March 31 for the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers play-off final.
The two nations share robust diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties, further symbolized by Pristina’s “Kosovo-Trkiye Friendship Park,” underscoring the bond between them. The 2014 friendly, which ended in a 6-1 victory for Trkiye, marked Kosovo’s early steps in international football. This match was especially memorable as Kosovo scored its first-ever goal against Trkiye, with Albert Bunjaku finding the net in the first half.
Kosovo had begun its journey in international football after UEFA granted it permission to play friendly matches in January 2014. The Kosovo National Football Team made its debut in a friendly match against Haiti, which concluded in a goalless draw.
In 2016, Kosovo’s footballing aspirations received a major boost when FIFA accepted the Kosovo Football Federation as a member following a vote at the FIFA Congress. The federation was elected as the 210th member of FIFA with a majority vote of 141 – 23. This milestone was preceded by Kosovo’s admission to UEFA on May 3, 2016, marking its official entry into the global football community.
