Ankara: Kuwait announced Thursday evening that its air defense systems were actively intercepting Iranian missiles and drones targeting its territory. The Kuwaiti military's General Staff reported that the nation was experiencing 'hostile' missile and drone attacks as part of Iranian assaults.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Kuwaiti military confirmed that any explosion sounds heard across the country were due to interception operations carried out by air defense systems. The military urged all citizens and residents to adhere to security and safety instructions issued by the authorities for their protection.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency detailed that the Iranian missile and drone attacks specifically targeted the US-operated Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, which is one of the largest American military facilities in the region. The news outlet also reported that warning sirens were activated at the base amid the ongoing threats.

The latest attack followed claims by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps earlier on Thursday. They asserted responsibility for strikes on US military facilities in Kuwait, including Ali Al Salem Air Base and Udairi Camp. Additionally, Kuwaiti authorities reported that the Abdali border crossing in the north had been targeted twice by drones, resulting in material damage but no reported casualties.

These developments come amid heightened regional tensions following a joint offensive by the US and Israel against Iran in February. This has led Tehran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks against US military assets hosted by countries in the region. Although the US and Iran recently signed a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding to end their conflict, tensions have reignited, particularly over navigation issues in the Strait of Hormuz.
