Latvian President Tasks Prime Minister With Forming New Government

Ankara:Incumbent Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has been asked by President Edgars Rinkevics to form a new government following the United List party's victory in the general election.

According to Anadolu Agency, the decision was made after President Rinkevics met with Kulbergs, whose party secured 41 seats in the Saeima, Latvia's newly elected parliament. The president stated that consultations with all parties elected to parliament indicated broad support for United List and Kulbergs to begin government formation talks.

The upcoming negotiations will focus on the coalition's structure, the allocation of responsibilities, and the drafting of a government policy statement. Although the president's announcement is political and not a formal legal nomination, an official nomination will occur once the new parliament convenes and the current government resigns.

The first sitting of the newly elected Saeima is scheduled for November 3. The United List plans to initially engage in discussions with its existing coalition partners, the National Alliance and New Unity, which won 10 and 7 seats, respectively. Together, these three parties would control 58 seats in the 100-member parliament.

Kulbergs has expressed opposition to cooperating with Latvia First, which came in second in the election, securing 17 seats. A coalition of the United List and the National Alliance alone would result in a marginal 51-seat majority. Analysts, as mentioned by the broadcaster, consider a three-party coalition with New Unity to be the most feasible outcome, though other possibilities remain.
