Beirut: The Lebanese army reported on Friday that Israeli forces approached one of its newly established positions in the southern town of Deir Mimas and deployed stun grenades. This action prompted the Lebanese army to reinforce the position, resulting in heightened alertness on both sides.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Lebanese army command stated that as part of its missions in Deir Mimas, located in the Marjayoun district, an army patrol established a temporary observation point on the outskirts of the town on September 10. This point was set up in coordination with the international Military Coordination Group for Lebanon to assist residents while they inspected their agricultural lands.
The army detailed that Israeli forces approached the position within the 'security zone' and threw stun grenades around the area. Following this, the Lebanese army reinforced the position, initiating a state of alert between the two sides.
Israeli forces eventually vacated the area after communications facilitated by the Military Coordination Group. Consequently, Lebanese army personnel returned to their primary position in the town. The army affirmed that it continues to monitor developments in coordination with the group.
The incident occurred amid ongoing Israeli attacks and military activities in southern Lebanon. Two individuals were injured on Friday due to Israeli artillery shelling targeting the Bint Jbeil district, along with Israeli incursions and military movements in various border areas.
During the recent conflict, the Israeli army advanced approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) into Lebanese territory, establishing a 'security zone' along the so-called 'yellow line.' On June 26, Beirut and Tel Aviv signed a US-sponsored 'framework agreement' in Washington, outlining a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas vacated by Israeli forces.
Despite the agreement, Israel has persisted in attacks in southern Lebanon and continues to occupy areas in the south, including some held for decades and others seized during recent wars and military operations.
