Beirut: Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that strengthening national unity and extending the state's sole authority across the country would bolster Lebanon's position in negotiations with Israel. These negotiations have been ongoing amidst continued Israeli attacks since early March, as reported by the state news agency NNA.
According to Anadolu Agency, Salam addressed these issues at the conclusion of a parliamentary question session, emphasizing that the trilateral framework, which includes the United States, is a 'political framework' rather than a legally binding agreement or treaty. This framework outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal and calls for the Lebanese state to exercise sole sovereignty over its territory.
Salam acknowledged that the desired outcomes have not yet been achieved. The Israeli attacks persist, withdrawal from all Lebanese territories is incomplete, many Lebanese prisoners remain detained, and numerous citizens are unable to return to their homes. He underscored the ongoing nature of the negotiations, asserting that Lebanon's position strengthens when united behind the state.
He further stated that enhancing national unity and extending state authority across all territories would amplify Lebanon's sources of power and its ability to secure rights. Salam's government aims for 'one people in one state, protected by one army,' rejecting Lebanon's transformation into an arena for competing regional blocs.
The US-sponsored negotiating framework between Lebanon and Israel aims for a phased Israeli withdrawal, the extension of Lebanese state authority, and security arrangements along the border.
On the topic of Lebanon's relations with Syria, Salam mentioned that Beirut is working towards fostering ties based on mutual respect for sovereignty, common interests, and non-interference. This includes reviewing previous bilateral agreements. He noted that nearly 700,000 Syrians have returned to their country, attributing this to the government's return plan, changing conditions in Syria, and incentives provided by international organizations.
Salam concluded by highlighting his government's priorities, which include financial and economic reforms, extending state authority, restricting weapons to the state, securing a full Israeli withdrawal, and advancing reconstruction.
