Beirut:Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has issued a warning regarding the potential exit of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) without a replacement.
According to Anadolu Agency, this warning was made during a meeting between Berri and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. They discussed political and security developments in Lebanon and the region, including Israel's ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement and its daily attacks on southern villages and towns.
The meeting also addressed Lebanon's relationship with the EU and the bloc's role in supporting the country, particularly in reconstruction efforts. Berri emphasized Lebanon's stance in favor of maintaining UNIFIL's presence in southern Lebanon as a stabilizing element.
Berri cautioned that allowing UNIFIL's mandate to expire without a replacement could undermine international legitimacy and negatively impact the EU's role. He pointed out that the core issue remains Israel's non-compliance with its obligations under various agreements.
UNIFIL, deployed since 1978, operates under UN Security Council resolutions to monitor hostilities and maintain security in the area. Its mandate is set to expire at the end of 2026, with Lebanon insisting on its continued presence.
In a related meeting, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed Lebanon's commitment to negotiations with Israel. He noted that the Lebanese army is fulfilling its duties in areas south of the Litani River, while Israel has not implemented its provisions of the framework agreement signed on June 26 under US sponsorship. Despite this agreement, Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon persist, with significant casualties reported by the Lebanese Health Ministry.
Aoun also highlighted Lebanon's interest in a strategic partnership with the EU, appreciating the European Council's plans to deploy a civilian-military mission to Lebanon. He emphasized the need for any replacement force for UNIFIL to operate under the UN flag.
