Beirut: Lebanon is prepared to demarcate its border with Syria, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated during a meeting with a media delegation in Beirut. Aoun highlighted that while the dispute over the Shebaa Farms remains unresolved, it can be deferred to a later stage.

According to Anadolu Agency, Aoun emphasized that bilateral relations between Lebanon and Syria are progressing, albeit slowly. He advocated for the activation of a judicial agreement to address the issue of Syrian detainees in Lebanese prisons. Aoun also disclosed that France has provided Lebanon with maps related to the border with Syria, expressing Lebanon's readiness for demarcation whenever Syria decides. He suggested the possibility of forming separate committees for maritime and land border demarcation.

The Shebaa Farms, a region under Israeli control since 2000, is a point of contention, with Lebanon asserting its claim over the territory. The Lebanese-Syrian border, characterized by mountains, valleys, and plains, lacks clear markers, contributing to diplomatic tensions and smuggling issues since both countries gained independence from France.

On the topic of Hezbollah's arms, Aoun stated that the Lebanese army's responsibilities extend beyond managing Hezbollah's weapons. The army is also tasked with combating drugs, fighting terrorism, securing borders, and maintaining internal security. He reiterated a government decision to restrict weapons to the army north of the Litani River, a move that Hezbollah has consistently opposed.

The Lebanese government, on August 5, approved a plan to place all weapons, including those held by Hezbollah, under state control, with the army responsible for implementation by the end of 2025. Hezbollah has rejected this plan, insisting on a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory before disarming.
