Libya’s East Welcomes Maritime Deal with Türkiye

Accra:Libya's maritime agreement with Türkiye has been endorsed by Saddam Haftar, the deputy commander of Libyan forces in the east, who views it as an opportunity for enhancing bilateral cooperation, investment, and fostering a long-term partnership.

According to Anadolu Agency, Haftar expressed his support for the recent approval by Libya's parliament of the maritime deal, as well as the repeal of previous resolutions against it. He emphasized that these moves signal a readiness to overcome past disputes and prioritize Libya's supreme interests in foreign relations.

Haftar highlighted that the agreement could bolster Libya's rights and economic interests in the Mediterranean while facilitating shared interests with Türkiye, which he described as a significant regional power. He stressed the importance of Libya's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independent decision-making, asserting that these guide the nation's foreign relations above political alignments.

He also noted that Libya's primary focus remains on ending internal divisions, unifying state institutions, and restoring national authority. Haftar stated that collaboration with Türkiye is part of a larger strategy to engage with regional and Mediterranean countries based on equality, mutual respect, and shared interests.

The maritime delimitation agreement between Türkiye and Libya, initially signed in November 2019, aims to define their maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Haftar reaffirmed his dedication to Libya's unity and independent governance.
