Libya’s Haftar and Pakistan’s Army Chief Discuss Regional Cooperation

Rawalpindi: Eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar met with Pakistan's Chief of Defense Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to discuss cooperation. The meeting, held in Rawalpindi, was confirmed by Pakistan military's media wing, which highlighted the exchange of views on security dynamics in their respective regions and professional cooperation.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussion emphasized the importance of ongoing engagement and collaboration between the two parties. Haftar was accompanied by his son, Lt. Gen. Saddam Khalid Haftar, during the visit. Field Marshal Munir reiterated Pakistan's commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Libya, underscoring Islamabad's support for peace, stability, and institutional development in Libya.

In December, Munir visited Benghazi to discuss strengthening defense ties, including training, capacity building, and counterterrorism efforts. The recent meeting aligns with efforts to broaden coordination in areas of mutual interest, serving the interests of both nations, as noted by Libya's eastern forces.

Khalifa Haftar expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and welcome, which he stated reflects the deep relations between the two leaderships and their peoples. In a significant development in December 2025, Pakistan's army chief visited Benghazi and concluded an arms deal worth over $4 billion with Saddam Haftar, the deputy commander of Libya's eastern forces.

Libya remains divided, with two rival administrations: one in Tripoli led by Dbeibeh controlling the west, and another in Benghazi led by Osama Hammad, appointed by the House of Representatives in early 2022, governing the east and much of the south.
