Baku:Lithuania is looking to extend the deployment of military personnel supporting border guards along its border with Russia until early November. This was announced by Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas on Wednesday, as reported by the Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT.
According to Anadolu Agency, Katelynas contacted Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas to request an extension of the enhanced border security measures and the continued involvement of troops. The initial agreement had the military deployment set to last until October 16, but Katelynas expressed hope for an extension until early November.
Currently, about 100 troops from the Lithuanian military are assisting the State Border Guard Service in securing the border with Russia. While no additional troops have been requested, Katelynas noted that the number of deployed personnel could be adjusted based on the border guards' needs. He emphasized that the exact number is flexible, with potential adjustments ranging from 60 to 100 troops, depending on the situation.
The deployment is described as a preventive measure in response to publicly available information suggesting a possible military mobilization by Russia. Although the threat level at the border has not increased, there is an expectation that some individuals might attempt to seek asylum in Lithuania to avoid military service.
The Lithuanian military states that cooperation between institutions to bolster border security is routine and ensures effective execution of joint tasks. Troops are working alongside border officials in patrolling areas around border guard stations and may also deploy mobile patrols, observation posts, and military police crews as needed.
