Vilnius:Allowing Belarusian potash fertilizer to transit through Lithuania in violation of EU sanctions would be regarded as a 'moral humiliation,' a senior adviser to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda stated. This warning comes as the United States engages in talks to purchase the product.

According to Anadolu Agency, national security adviser Deividas Matulionis emphasized the moral, legal, and financial implications of violating EU sanctions on LRT radio. He noted that US President Donald Trump announced plans for a major deal to buy Belarusian fertilizer, raising questions about potential transit routes since EU restrictions remain in force.

Matulionis asserted that a US-Belarus deal would not necessarily involve transit through Lithuania and rejected any claims of Washington pressuring Vilnius to allow it. He mentioned discussions with US Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale, which he described as inquiries into Lithuania's stance, not as demands.

He further expressed Lithuania's opposition to routing US purchases through Russia, as this would benefit Moscow financially. Matulionis highlighted that regional countries have upheld a unified position and saw no concessions on transit.

The EU sanctions on Belarusian fertilizer are set to expire at the end of February unless renewed.
