Vilnius: Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has expressed concerns about the risks associated with "overly close" relations with China, while emphasizing the need for both nations to be willing to restore diplomatic ties. "Lithuania sees all the risks associated with overly close engagement with the Chinese regime," Nauseda stated in an interview with radio Ziniu Radijas.

According to Anadolu Agency, Nauseda highlighted the deterioration of diplomatic relations after Lithuania strengthened its ties with Taiwan, resulting in a significant downgrade. He stressed that a mutual willingness is essential for restoring these relations. The president also urged the European Union to adopt a clear stance on its relationship with China, pointing out the complexities of viewing Beijing as an economic partner, competitor, and strategic adversary simultaneously.

In a related matter, Nauseda addressed the issue of extending European Union sanctions on Belarus. He accused Belarus of being a Russian ally, maintaining political prisoners, and causing security incidents at Lithuania's border, including smuggling balloons. "With the European Union set to decide in late February, I will be among those who most firmly demand the extension of these sanctions," Nauseda asserted.

Recent security concerns were underscored by incidents at Vilnius Airport, which had to temporarily shut down operations due to balloon incursions. Nauseda warned that if Belarus seeks normalization of relations with the European Union or the United States, it must cease such provocative actions.
