Vilnius:Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has expressed skepticism regarding the use of the term 'hybrid threats' to describe Russian operations, asserting that some recent assaults are more accurately described as 'kinetic.' This statement was made during the opening of the Berlin Security Conference, an event co-hosted by Germany and Lithuania.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Nauseda described the term 'hybrid threats' as a 'convenient euphemism' that fails to clearly define the nature of these activities. He emphasized the kinetic nature of some recent attacks.
During his remarks, Nauseda underscored the importance of the transatlantic relationship as the foundation for collective security and advocated for greater European responsibility in its own defense, which he believes should bolster NATO. He also highlighted the defense cooperation between Lithuania and Germany, including the deployment of Germany's 45th Armored Brigade in Lithuania and collaborative defense industry efforts.
Furthermore, Nauseda referred to Germany as Lithuania's foremost partner in the defense sector, citing projects such as the construction of a Rheinmetall artillery ammunition factory in Lithuania and a joint venture with KNDS for the assembly, maintenance, and repair of Leopard tanks.
Looking to the future, Nauseda outlined Lithuania's priorities for its presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027. These priorities include security and defense, internal security, EU enlargement, and competitiveness. The presidential office has stated that Lithuania will aim to secure enduring support for Ukraine's security and defense, enhance Europe's defense readiness through initiatives like the Eastern Flank Watch, and improve military mobility.
