Lula Urges Trump to Stay Out of Brazil’s Election Affairs

Brasilia: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has urged US President Donald Trump to avoid interfering in Brazil's domestic political matters. Lula's call for non-interference comes on the heels of his participation in the G7 summit, where he addressed reporters with a clear message: "Don't meddle in the Brazilian elections, because the Brazilian elections are a problem for Brazil."

According to Anadolu Agency, Lula acknowledged Trump's right to personal and ideological preferences but stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty. Although Trump has the freedom to maintain his friendship with the Bolsonaro family, Lula remarked, "It's his problem. There's no accounting for taste."

The Brazilian President's comments follow a recent meeting at the White House between Trump and Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Flavio Bolsonaro, who is a candidate in Brazil's 2026 presidential race, used the opportunity to criticize Lula's administration and lobby against US tariffs.

Trump and the elder Bolsonaro shared a close political relationship, especially during Bolsonaro's presidency and Trump's first term. After Bolsonaro's conviction in Brazil, Trump publicly defended him, calling the trial unfair and suggesting potential retaliatory measures like tariffs or sanctions.
