Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron announced a strategic shift in France's nuclear policy by ordering an increase in the number of nuclear warheads and ceasing the disclosure of the stockpile's size. This move is part of what Macron describes as 'advanced deterrence.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron made this announcement during a speech at the Ile Longue naval base, citing a need to end speculation and address the deteriorating global security climate. He emphasized that France is not entering an arms race but is taking necessary steps to strengthen its arsenal.

Macron highlighted a broader European dimension to the deterrence strategy, designating Germany as a key partner under the 2019 Aachen Treaty. The initiative will involve cooperation with several European countries, including Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed Poland's participation in talks with France and other European allies on the program of advanced nuclear deterrence.

The French President outlined future modernization plans, such as the launch of a program for strategic hypersonic and maneuverable missiles. He also noted that the initiative, known as the European Long-Range Strike Approach (ELSA), will be distinct from NATO arrangements but complementary at both strategic and technical levels.

Macron expressed concerns about the shifting international environment, citing China's military expansion as a source of instability. He stressed the importance of preparing for potential global conflicts and their ramifications on European security.

In a joint declaration, Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that the Franco-German initiative would complement NATO's nuclear deterrence and not replace it. They reaffirmed their commitment to NATO's and the EU's security frameworks, aiming to strengthen collective defense structures in coordination with international allies.
