Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday reaffirmed France's support for Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity following a phone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron stated on X that the talks were prompted by the August 8 meeting in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which resulted in an agreement aimed at normalizing relations between the two nations with the support of the United States.

Macron expressed his appreciation for the agreement reached, acknowledging the commitment of the United States in facilitating this step towards the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He also expressed optimism that the accord would swiftly lead to the signing and ratification of a peace treaty that respects the interests of both parties. Macron emphasized France's ongoing commitment to peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus and reiterated France's readiness to support and contribute to ongoing efforts, including strengthening interconnections in coordination with regional actors and partners.

Further, Macron and Pashinyan agreed to deepen bilateral relations in various areas, building upon the Armenian leader's visit to Paris on July 14. A statement from the Armenian Prime Minister's Office noted Pashinyan's emphasis on the peace agreement opening up new investment opportunities in Armenia and the region. Both leaders expressed their mutual willingness to maintain an active political dialogue between Paris and Yerevan on both bilateral and international matters.
