Yerevan: French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for Europe to bolster its 'strategic autonomy' in crucial sectors, highlighting the vulnerabilities exposed by recent global crises. Macron, speaking at the 8th Meeting of the European Political Community, underscored the dangers of excessive reliance on external partners.
According to Anadolu Agency, Macron pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and disruptions in global supply chains as stark reminders of Europe's structural dependencies. He identified critical areas such as medical supplies, semiconductors, energy, and defense where Europe must reduce its reliance through strategic investments, coordination, and by diversifying supply chains.
Macron called for enhanced European solidarity, advocating for the relocation of production facilities and the strengthening of partnerships to mitigate geopolitical risks. He also proposed that Europe could assume a significant diplomatic role in the Strait of Hormuz, an area of escalating tension.
He remarked on the potential for Europe to provide 'diplomatic, military, economic, and financial' support to help de-escalate tensions and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The region has witnessed heightened tensions due to US and Israeli military actions against Iran, followed by retaliatory measures, which have disrupted maritime traffic in this vital corridor.
Despite a ceasefire, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, significantly affecting the flow of maritime activities.
