Ankara: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Colombia's northeastern Santander department, prompting evacuations in buildings in Bogota and the northeastern city of Bucaramanga as the tremor was felt in multiple regions, according to media reports.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported that the epicenter was located in the Los Santos municipality in Santander, at a depth of 149 kilometers. Initially reported as a magnitude 5.4, the SGC later updated the magnitude to 5.1. The tremor was notably felt in Bogota, Bucaramanga, Medellin, and other areas, with residents experiencing strong shaking in several municipalities.

In Bogota, numerous buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Workers and residents exited offices and public buildings, gathering in streets and open spaces. Similarly, in Bucaramanga, residents evacuated buildings, and videos circulating online showed people congregating outside.

Earlier the same day, seismic activity was recorded in several parts of Colombia. A magnitude 3.0 quake occurred in Istmina, Choco department, at a depth of 39 kilometers. Shortly thereafter, the Bolivar department experienced a shallow magnitude 2.3 tremor, affecting areas including Simiti and Santa Rosa del Sur. The strongest early-morning earthquake was a magnitude 3.1 tremor in Los Santos, Santander.

Despite the alarm caused by the earthquake, no deaths or serious injuries have been reported. Diego Armando Mendoza, mayor of Los Santos, confirmed that there were no reports of significant damage or injuries, although two community members reported minor problems with their homes.

This recent earthquake follows a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10, resulting in at least 321 deaths and over 4,500 injuries. The previous quake caused widespread damage in Choco and surrounding areas.
